My girlfriends (2) and I attended the 13th Annual Classic R&B Weekend Concert which was amazing! We had so much fun! We ate, danced, sang along with the music artists until our voices was sore! Just stopping by tuning…getting in from a driving in a rainstorm…I missed my song being so late coming onboard I guess…:)

I’m a ’60s kid & if you grew up in early-60s New York, you still heard the music of The Drifters, The Coasters, The Moonglows, Johnny Ace, The Flamingos, Jesse Belvin, Charles Brown, The Orioles & all of the “bird” groups, to name but a few, in your home.

I saw this announcement & being an unabashed fan & friend of Russell Thompkins Jr., I had to check this out.
A listen to this song made me smile, because it brought back memories of being a pre-school kid, sitting in our living room, when my mother would play these songs, as well as memories of my pre-teen years, when my mother still played those 78’s & the Rock & Roll craze was kicking in with the Dick Clark LPs, ushered in by movies like The Lords Of Flatbush, American Graffiti, shortly followed by TV shows like Happy Days.

This song has that 1954 Flamingos/Moonglows/Ravens/Drifters type of vibe. I won’t compare Russell to any of those pioneering falsetto tenors, because Russell Thompkins Jr. has his own style, besides which, Russell has always given credit to his forbears. But, it was nice to hear Maurice in an entirely different element, getting his Jimmy Ricks/Bill Pinckney on.

This is the sound that nudged us forward from Gospel, the blues, into the R&B era, which led directly into one of the most dynamic eras of music, bar none…the SOUL ERA.

Listening to this song is like seeing an long-lost old friend & if you grew up with this sound as I did, it’s familiar, comforting & soothing.

I only wish that today’s generation were able to really hear music such as this & to be able to appreciate music that actually features something called melody, lyrical content, modulations, chord changes & more than that, love.

I love this song & this is a great job all around.

Hello Maurice ..I have been a fan and a long time listener of the LOVE ZONE since the early ’90s and found it by accident…always love the old school songs that you and Howie played….I even stay and listen to those following programs after your shows…even got lots of those old albums ( still in mint condition )… haven’t listen to your radio show in about several years since I moved further up in the Bronx area. One of the MAIN REASON is that I hear 2 other radio stations homing on the same frequency and both of them are college radio stations : one broadcast out of Jersey and the other from LONG ISLAND. .I’ve been meaning to stop by City College and inform your general manager about it…anyway I am glad that you got your website ..I can still listen to the sweet soul music…thanks for the memories…peace.

The show and everything else with it has grown since my first experience in the Love Zone studios during the hugely successful Love Zone show back in 2003! Still a fan and friend of the show after all these years! I have made purchases in the easy to use Voice Distribution stores and the customer service is awesome…fast shipping is the best feature! Not to mention the many events I’ve attended over the years! The website is awesome! I can now view it on my iPhone with no issues! Thanks Maurice and as always, best wishes for more great things to come ur way!

Here, it seems you are over modulated your tone is good but the voice volume don’t match the volume of the songs, too high, but what you present is good quality keep it up.

I have met some of the most caring pleasant incredible people through the LZ chat room and think of all of you as family. The Love Zone is truly about spreading love, remembering when music had that same message and to go back to a time when things were simpler. Such a wonderful rendition of a warm and beautiful classic.. Maurice “The voice” Watts, and Russell Tompkins Jr. have done a marvelous job of renewing and bringing to life The marvelous harmonies, crisp falsetto and smooth round Cognac baritone. Reminiscent of a warm cozy Christmas evening spent by the fireplace. Excellent performance.
